Day Trip to San Antonio

We decided to make a quick jaunt on down to San Antonio! Got my NPS stamp at the Missions, right next to the one I got when I was little. Went to the Alamo, sorely disappointed, but the Buckhorn Texas Ranger Museum wasn't too shabby! Although slightly creepy with the animal heads and chairs....With a final stop of the San Antonio Riverwalk before lunch at La Gloria on the outskirts of town!

Everything IS bigger in TX, including my appetite! (Pt 1)

Tim and I went on a mini vacation to Austin, Texas in mid December! We saw the State Capital, ate Gourdough's AMAZING drop dead awesome donuts, did some Corepower Yoga, did some shopping, visited the very first Whole Foods (not just visited, but probably went literally 9 times in the few days we were there), wanted to buy this super awesome cowboy boots, ate Torchy's Tacos, went and checked out University of Texas' campus,  AND we took a Food Tour. In case you didn't notice, it was quite food themed.....

We did the Austin Eats Food Tour and it was fabulous. So much deliciousness!

Sausage gravy biscuit - Farmers Market
Chocolate Cocoa beans - Farmers Market
Breakfast taco - Taco Deli
Kitchen sink burger - Huts Hamburgers
Chicken eggs hollandaise / Moscow mule- Haddingtons
Golden Egg Cinnamon scone- Fancy & Staple

Birthday Weekend!

Two weekends ago was my birthday!!! It was a pretty crazy weekend just in general. And I feel like I've been going non stop since. Ill bulletpoint it!

Friday night was spent running all over town between Blaines and Walmart gather supplies, and then proceeding to design and create our Color Run t-shirts of glory.

Saturday:
Tim and I drove down to Des Moines for the Color Run.
Ate a glorious Whole Foods breakfast.
Found the perfect parking spot downtown.
Perfect parking does not equal perfect weather.
Windy, cold (40s), with no sun. Not ideal for running in a specially designed thin tshirt.
Finally got to visit the Lululemon Showroom, disappointing, only three racks of miscellaneous clothes.
Brief walk to Runners Village, freezing.
Saw Ryleah, a former video board kid. Loved it.
Sat in the car making the rough decision.
Cold, had a 2hour wait, still having neck pain.
Decided TOTALLY randomly to drive up to Minneapolis to go birthday shopping!
Got to Minneapolis, straight to the Athleta store.
Shopping efficiency, 90 minutes.
Slightly double the limit spent. Oops.
Thank God Minnesota doesn't have sales tax.
But I did get more than workout clothes! I got some work clothes and holiday options too!
Tim made for a great shopping buddy. He holds AND advises. Without complaint (as long as he has his smartphone).
There MIGHT be a cupcake store between the car and Athleta….but we saved them for after dinner!
Big dinner conundrum of where to go.
Best decision all day, The Anchor.
An amazing dive, packed super early on Saturday.
Best fish and chips since Australia (that's saying something)
Second Whole Foods run for stocking up.
Headed home via the parents house for a quick hello.

Sunday:
Red Velvet & Cake Batter...mmm
Slept way too late. (Yesterday was jam packed!)
Princess delivery service took me to Hot Yoga
First time back after medical issues and injuries.
Been way too long.
Hyvee run for birthday breakfast and a caramel apple.
Nixed breakfast for birthday lunch with the family.
Knee pads, fro yo, and a workout rounded out the hang out afternoon.
Mini fashion show for family at birthday dinner!
Got a new NLXF shirt, massage gift card, a halloween plate and halloween socks!
Grandma and Grandpa came over for the awesome meal of rouladden, cucumber/tomato/mozzarella salad, and spaghetti corn.
Sweet potato cupcakes from Scratch for dessert!
Evening concluded with mom's travel questions from a box!

Happy Birthday to Me!!!!!!!

Great Weekend.

Fall is officially here. This past weekend was totally relaxing but yet packed with awesome.
  • Made numerous combinations of peanut butter, chocolate, honey, corn flakes, awesomey goodness.
  • Played with a new puppy in an elementary school parking lot at 10 at night.
  • Hot yoga both Saturday and Sunday. New studios make me happy.
  • Drove down to Iowa City to Wilson's Orchard. Huge apples. Sugar free apple butter. Super cute shop.

  • Perfect Weather.
  • Shopping at the Outlets for Tim to get new work pants after dropping major inches this summer.
  • Getting sucked in to buying myself stuff at UnderArmor.
  • Traumatic "fashion" sighting though. I mean, really, someone purposefully put this outfit together for a public display?! My my. But the workers were in too tight sweatpants and Hawkeye shirts...so I guess it makes senses ;-)

  • Friends from out of town visiting
  • Watching the races at Cattle Congress
  • Even more people convening and hanging out at Toads and BWW

  • Beautiful day on Sunday to hang out, go on walks, convertible rides and take naps with kitties,

December Photo Project! #11 &11.5 : Cold and Windy City

I'll have a proper Chicago post this week hopefully, but for now, you'll get a sneak peak DPP style.....
DPP #11: Chicago!!!!

DPP #11.5: Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Gluttony at its best. Even for those who didn't have a single ounce of meat!

DPP #9: Helpful smile in every aisle!

Nothing like a late night shopping trip to HyVee to get food that you totally forgot you have to make for the next day with a cohort that clearly loves some Curtis Stone action in the meat department.....(pun intended?)

No Lightning Bolt Scar for Me!

It's been awhile since a real update, but I can't say anything extremely out of the ordinary AND exciting has happened recently. A few weeks ago Tim, Mom, and I went up to a day trip to Minneapolis to do a bit of shopping, but nothing crazy (unless you count the amount of things we got at Whole Foods, or the receipt I had from Lululemon....).

I've also had more than a few battles with the scale, which has led me to start the Skinny Girl brand of Restore and Cleanse, just thought I might feel a bit better. And it has, if by better you think I mean I feel like I want to choke all the while drinking the two packets a day. Although if I mix it with half a lemonade packet, hold my breath, chug a few swallows, then still hold my breath while I chase it with a regular packet juice, the exhale, I can handle it. Kinda. Ugh. Its gross people. Really really gross.

Along the lines of probably too much information, I have been exiled from the land of yoga for too long (a few days), hopefully ending tomorrow *fingers crossed*. This coming from the fact that I have about an inch and a half of wire sewn into my back that I don't want to be torn out by an overly aggressive downward dog. Ok, that sounds much more exciting than it is. I had a suspicious mole on my back, they sliced it off with a razor, felt that it was an even sneakier bugger than they thought and went back with what seemed like a machete and took quite a chunk out that required lots of stitching. And really, the only thing that is hindered by it is yoga. Ugh. Although yesterday and today, it has been itching like crazy. Its all I can do to not take a hairbrush to it. But I wouldn't exactly like to revisit the Covenant Surgical Center if I can help it. It was quite the experience though, the nurses came in for quite the party and I got lots of pre-warmed sheets. Not too bad if he didn't slice and dice me.

But I swear not all of my life is a physical mess! The beginning of summer is taking a chill pill (or a sweltering hot pill) in preparation for the insanity that is coming up. 10 days in Africa is looming quite soon. Not exactly the way I thought I would be feeling about it, but there isn't much to do about it unfortunately. I'll go and try not to punch too many white people in the face. That will be that. Then the day after I get back is our 4th of July party which Tim has taken charge of. So at least I'll have that to directly look forward to while in Kenya.

Then a family vacation to Colorado for a week, which will be absolutely SPLENDID. I havent been to Copper Mountain in five-ish years and I want to go now. Like, yesterday. It's going to be perfect. I can just tell now.

A wedding weekend in Fargo. Then a fantabulous wedding outside of Boston which we are turning into a week long trip involving an Incubus concert, a Cirque du Soleil show, Boston vs Yankees game, few days in Boston, capped off with the wedding and subsequent wedding bonfire.

And then athletic season starts.....the football and volleyball schedule is already out. Seems like summer is already almost over before it's begun!

That Arch feeds me well!

Last week, I was treated to a bit of happy times before the torment of dental extraction. Tim and I had gotten tickets to Ke$ha quite awhile ago, and Mom decided she wanted to be part of the road trip down to St Louis, minus the concert. As a sidenote, Tim had the Ke$ha cd hidden in his car for quite sometime before I found out and was pissed that he hadn't shared it with me!

But anyways, so we all made the unexciting trip down early Tuesday morning. Wicked early, only so that we could endulge in just one more meal at First Watch while down there. Egg white omelet with turkey, spinach, feta, & tomato. Turkey sausage. And then Tim and I shared at banana crunch pancake. Holy breakfast in my belly. I would eat there every meal if i could. Not even kidding.

And then just like any twoday getaway, the shopping craze started. In a matter of hours we hit up REI (no dice on the desired sandals, but lots of clothes tried on!), Container Store, Gap (yay to the Buy a pair of pants, Get a shirt free deal, although the hoodie "jacket" I wanted was cheaper than the sweater I was allowed to get), and Macys (where the gift card went unspent).
My big excitement part of the shopping was supposed to be the fact that they have a Lululemon in StL. But then, we got there. I was pretty disappointed in the selection at this store. They had very few options, and even few fewer sizes. Like, they have maybe 4 different sweatshirts, and each style had maybe two or three sizes in stock. And sizes are 0-12 mind you, not S/M/L. And when I walked in, I did a quick lap just to see what I was working with, and a lady came up to us and asked if we were lookging for a gift! I was ridiculously offended. Who starts their greeting with that? What about me right now says I am looking for a gift instead of for myself....not amused. Even less amused when there was a lady in there with three SHRIEKING children. One of them was playing with a box of safety pins used for hemming. Like, what kind of mother let's their kid do that? Geeze. But I ended up getting two sale items. Mom bought me a sweet pair of gray pants, kind of hard to describe them actually. And then I got a bra/tank combo that i really dig, but also hard to desribe. Let's just say, I love workout clothes.

A quick jaunt into Williams and Sonoma had my mom buying a crap load of lavender, and on our way out, I saw a HUGE glass jar of  "Nut & Grain". Tim bought it instantly, its totally delicious. Well worth the overpricedness of such a jar of glory.

Dinner @ Pi Pizzeria. It actually turned out that it was directly across the street from the concert venue, but it wasnt really relevant since we had to take Mom back to the hotel inbetween dinner and the show anyway. However, it did mean we got a sneak preview of the 14 year olds going to the Ke$ha concert all dressed up and ready to go. It was insane. I thought Lady Gaga was crazy, those were weird, but these were SLUTTY. Like, I cannot believe 75% were allowed to leave their house looking like that. Both mom and Tim ordered the same pizza, only Tim got deep dish and mom got thin crust. Both were delicious, The Western: mozzarella, spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onions, and garlic. And I got the Bada Bing salad: field greens, toasted almonds, gorgonzola cheese, dried bing cherries, with raspberry vinaigrette. Only swap the gorgonzola (GROSS) for goat cheese. Yummy! http://www.restaurantpi.com

We totally lucked out getting back after dropping mom off at the hotel, parked a block away, and saw there were two lines. One was like two blocks long, and the other was maybe 10 people. And we knew it was a long shot, but we figured we would just attempt the the short one. Silly kids, it wasn't a special line at all, and we got in way before we would have in the other line. It was an all ages show, but we got split into lines of 21+ and underage because the underagers got charged an extra fee to get in. The staff of the Pageant was absolutely amazing. Best staff I have ever encountered at every level. Door security, ID check, bartenders, ushers, everyone. I loved it. And then there is the venue itself. Its amazing. Upstairs seated balcony thats 21+, has its own bar, assigned seating, and great views. Although the lack of jr high girls and stretching room was the best perk. Show was great, pretty sure there was lots of lipsyncing, but frankly, I dont care that much if the stage show makes up for it. And her and the dancers totally did. Including the stage director in the Santa costume....yup. Just really fun in general.
As a side story, the opening one man band was called "Beardo the Trailer Park Hero". Yup.

I slept like a rock, and despite the super early wake up call the day before, and a crazy busy day, and going to bed later than I had wanted to, I was awake enough when my alarm went off at 6:55 in order to go down to the hotel gym. Mom even went with me! The room was like a sauna. I wasn't on very long and I was quite moisturized afterwards ;-)
Breakfast Feast at First Watch. Coffee, fresh fruit crepes, turkey sausage links, and shared a carrot cake pancake with Tim. The granola and blueberry muffin that came with got saved for the car ride home at least. I was STUFFED.
We then went to my mecca, Whole Foods, we spent 90 minutes there, and I could have spent 90 more. But my mom had finished her shopping and Tim had put up with enough of my aisle wanderings. We got quite the haul though. Including a peanut butter and jelly on banana bread for the road home. We pulled out of town around 11:30, and I have officially added St Louis to my ok long weekend destination visit list. Their food choices are growing and are pretty sweet looking (not including the ever fantastic First Watch). Their shopping is grand, and it seems like there is plenty to do. I vote yes.

Black Friday. Death to my wallet.

I had numerous games on Black Friday, so getting up at the buttcrack of dawn was not going to happen. (Let's be honest, it probably wouldn't have happened anyway), so my black Friday was spent pouring over Amazon's Lightning Deals. From my bed. In my pajamas. With my cats. Definitely a win.

A bigger plus was the haul that I got. Now, it might have all been for me, but Ill shop for everyone else later! Not off of Amazon. With more thought! But this was sheer impulse. Never a good thing for me. Oops ;-)

But in the end, I ended up with the following, (not including the breadmaker that my mom passed off to me two days before):

new earbuds (list price: $300. bought for $30)
new Asics running shoes
a toaster oven (hello kitty no longer will be making my toast)
Kitchen Aid stand mixer (I've craved for years)

Now, if you know my kitchen, you know my problem for the past four years. NOW add in 3 big appliances....

Later on I added two more pairs of running shoes to the pile as well as some swank UnderArmor socks from Dicks (but only because my Mommy and Daddy love me dearly) and some new Christmas Moose cat toys for Myla to annihilate.

And now we are going to Boston for four days? Over the Christmas Shopping Season? My wallet is screwed.

Running Ragged!

Good Lord people! I feel like August is trying to kill me! The past two weekends have been crazy, Des Moines, Farmer's Markets, up to Minneapolis for shopping and Something Corporate, Des Moines, Tims work training, friend's birthdays, new yoga, more shopping, more friend time!

And now, the next two weekends will be even crazier. Next weekend (aka 5 days) is Boston for an engagement party and hanging with old friends and the madre. Then two days later Tim and I spend five days in San Francisco playing tourist and seeing more old friends. Then a few days later, back up north to see Ms. Lady Gaga. Insanity. Me and my Civic are the bestest of friends as of now. My back and I, do not share the same loving relationship. Here's the craziness so far!

Strawberry Rhubarb Coffeecake at the Farmer's Market.

Des Moines might actually be good for something! HUGE Farmer's Markets.

Lots of sunsets in the car.

I only have a few moments at home these days. Olivia misses me lots!

Tim saw these and asked if we were moving back to Boston. Skinny jeans still baffle me.

Not the dress I ended up getting, but I still totally dug it.

Something Corporate. I took video of the entire 9minutes of Konstantine. Love.

Emcal loves her some birthday $1 margarita.

Blurp!

Uncle Sam stole my money. Lots of it. So did my dentist, but I feel like he actually earned that money, or most of it. Argh.

I feel like my bank account is steadily growing smaller, and we haven't even left yet. Last weekend, in Chicago, my lovely adorable awesome parents bought us two trail packs and a smaller pack for our trip. I love them. The trail packs are gorgeous, and the smaller one is BRIGHT orange. A few years ago, I would never have picked it, and now I wish I could carry it everywhere!

Tim and I also splurged at REI and bought ourselves waterproof hiking shoes. Mine are hideous. Why buy hideous shoes you ask? Because they were more comfortable than the cute ones. But hobbits really can't be judging MY feet, right? ;)

PS. During my training session this morning, she had me flapping like a bird in the hallway. Nope, not humiliating at all....

Fall Fashions?

I know, how did I get so lucky to find someone with such a fashion sense ;) But its sad when I realize that this stuff was actually available for one to purchase at regular store. H&M in Minneapolis isn't as cutting edge as the one in Boston, we frequently find stuff at the MN one that was out in Boston two years prior. No joke.

But anyways, the whole fam took a journey up north this weekend. We usually go up closer to Christmas, but with UNI's schedule this year, I work every weekend between now and New Years (including Thanksgiving) so this was the weekend!

Good trip all in all, got some cute clothes, a brand new camera (finally!) and ate way too much food. But I think a good trip can be shown by what the people look like on the car ride home.....

Dad barely containing himself watching his new favorite show, Castle. Only to be interrupted by poking me and hitting me with water bottles...

Chris sleeps in the oddest positions in the car...how his neck works after this, I have no idea...

Up North!

Saturday, Tim and I woke up early and headed up North to meet up with a few friends of ours at the Minnesota Rennaissance Fair. We went a few years ago, with my family, including my mother who was in a wheelchair with a broken leg. The heat of that day, combined with the uneven terrain and wheelchair made it a less than pleasant day, so we wanted to try again! We mostly just walked around, ate some food, and looked at all the crazies dressed up to the nines in their outfits. I can appreciate the ones that get super into it and its detailed and nice, but wearing a Halloween costume? Fail. And then there is this guy....check out the tights!
We also got a chance to see the Cabor Toss as part of the Highland Festival Weekend. Tim was excited to see it, and it was interesting to watch for awhile. But we never really did figure out what the actual goal was. But the guys warming up were hilarious to watch.
After the Fair, we visited IKEA with everyone and hit up MOA for some shopping and dinner. I got the sweetest hat at my new favorite store. Sun Dog Trading. Love it.

Sunday, after some delicious bagels (I could never pass up a good bagel!) Tim and I (alone) went and got my National Park stamp at the Museum of Science, but ended up staying to see the Titanic Exhibit and omnimax. It was really pretty sweet. It was pretty interesting, and I learned new stuff about it even. Recommended.

It was a gorgeous day out, so before leaving town, we stopped at the Como Zoo. Parking was insane, and yet we managed the second row. Win. Passed some monkeys, zebras, and giraffes. Watched snow leopards sunbathe and lions snooze. It was a quick trip, but perfect.

How adorable is that? These were the lilypads outside the zoo. I have never seen anything that large. They were HUGE!!!!

It was a quick trip, but we did quite a bit and Sunday was awesomely relaxing and beautiful. But now I have a short time to prepare for Los Angeles on Thursday and the first UNI game of the season tomorrow night! More time please?
