Throwback Thursday: Future Oompa Loompa.

Look for an upcoming post about my uncle. Tonight we went and saw a stage version of Willy Wonka, put on by the group that works with the mentally handicapped. He happens to be one of those people, and man, was he the center of attention tonight. Only an oompa loompa, he made sure he was seen by everyone. Pictures will be included. White overalls, orange face and green wig. Score. Trust me. You will want to see it. But this picture from the olden days will have to do for now.

Appropriately titled, Easter!

The family gathered. The food was made. The food was demolished. Baskets were given. Chocolate was consumed. Easter success!

I might have made broccoli salad, corn pudding, carrot souffle, and Tim slow roasted the pork, but Grandma brought the chocolate pie and cheesecake!

Attendees frequently look as though they are in a food coma.....

Deep in thought.....

Or about to be consumed by the floral arrangement.

Sydney seemed to think she was the featured guest of Easter

Making appearances everywhere and with everyone!

Including his own seat at the dinner table. My mother could not spoil that cat anymore rotten!

And then of course, boys doing boy things!

More Food! Part Four: Christmas Dinner.

Our lovely friend Jayson was forced to stay in Cedar Falls for the holiday, despite his family all being in Minnesota, so he joined us for the Christmas Day Dinner of prime rib. If you know me, I don't eat beef, but at this meal, even not eating the main course, there was NO shortage of food.

Not even my pumpkin pie! Cause pumpkin pie is gross. Monkeys chew up pumpkins and then spit them in the can to sell as pumpkin filling. Yup, that's what my daddy taught me as a small child, so it MUST be true! Icky!

This Frosty head has been at my grandparents ever since I can remember, they had a lot of decorations that i couldnt really play with growing up, but this one was near the back stairs, and we could twist his nose to hear the song play any time we wanted. Well, its been probably a decade, but I twisted that nose and tried to document the moment of nostalgia. Tim decided nostalgia was stupid and needed to butt in ;)

Turkey Day. Gobble Gobble!

I'm gonna take a quick break from December photo project and recap Thanksgiving.
Pretty typical Thanksgiving, Tim and I went over to the Grandparents early to help with the last minute dishes, Mom, Dad and Chris joined up. A delectable meal was had. I had tried a new recipe for cranberry sauce, from Williams and Sonoma. It tasted like Christmas smells, a little overbearing almost, but it did tone down as days passed with the leftovers. Yum.

I also tried my hand at a blueberry pie. None of this canned blueberry nonsense either, a FRESH blueberry pie. I kind of freehanded the inside, and while it got a tiny bit liquidy, it ended up being super tasty. Only a bit of the ooze made it to the outside of the crust.

But really, the best part is in the top picture. I spent over an hour the night before Thanksgiving, making every single family member an Indian head dress to be worn for our November Nordyke Family picture. And I am of the belief that it turned out quite well...if you ever need a laugh during the holidays, put your grandparents into culturally offensive head gear. It's fantastic.

Random little tiddybits.

Ok, I said I would fill you in today. So I will! But I will start with the completely random and probably totally pointless stuff.

--My dad made the request of chocolate cupcakes yesterday, so I obliged and baked the most delicious chocolate cupcakes with cherry filling mixed in, with chocolate frosting. I had a beautiful sugar coma from licking the spoon alone! After delivering dad's portion, we took a few to my grandparents at their new house. They moved in just two days ago and still were getting unpacked, but they sat us down at the kitchen table, got us a soda, and chatted until 10pm! They would have kept talking I'm sure, but we had to get going. It was nice though, I have rarely heard my grandfather talk about his military experience, and he told quite a few stories about it last night. We also learned that they had honeymooned in Seattle. Interesting little things you learn, that you had no idea you didn't know....

--Also. Random factoid. Did you know that tomatoes emit a gas that causes other fruits and vegetables to ripen faster, and therefore rot faster? So keep them stored separately! Something tells me this is widely known to everyone that isn't me...

--I had a dream two nights ago about the girl that has cut me out of her life. She won't talk to me anymore, and we really have no idea why, but thats besides the point. It was a pretty detailed dream with the two of us baking with her boyfriend. Only the boyfriend in the dream was my other friend's ex boyfriend. Its just very very weird. I don't really think about her much, and to randomly dream like that, odd.

--Lastly, for this post. I don't even know how to mention this, because even just knowing what I know is part of the rumor mill. But that rumor is not only making me count my chickens before they are hatched, but I am harvesting those chickens eggs, taking them to the kitchen, and making an omelet with them....yeah. Nevermind for now. I'll keep updating if there is anymore progression.

Yes, I know I said absolutely nothing about anything in that last paragraph. Jill's fault! ;)

Happy Friday. One more post later today. With the BIG news. BEST news. Yay.

Sweet Sturgis Falls

I know it was two weeks ago already, but after the crazy bonding that was around Cedar Falls this weekend after all of the tree damage, I thought I would post a few better times of the streets of Cedar Falls.

Tim and Grandpa eating breakfast before the parade began.

Kids blanket. And yet, all of us are adults.

MMMmmmm....turkey leg. The first year they had them at Sturgis Falls!

Classic grandmother eating picture. Tenderloin of glory.

Matt. Framed very nicely ;)

Throwback Thursday!

I found a bunch of sweet pictures while sorting through a million photos for my brother's graduation. So I decided to create Throwback Thursday. Today's was going to be of my grandmother. She was the unfortunate victim of fate today and had to have a few stitches after a fall she took, so it was going to be an ode to her! But I couldn't find any of her in the pile (this must be remedied) so I found the next best thing. This is my Grandfather. My guess is that this was taken in the late eighties, but no one seems to know where. But does it matter? He's posing as a moose. This amuses me.

Not Quite the Emerald City...

Tonight was a newly annual event put on by EPI (Exceptional Persons Incorporated). A local director and a few mentally able actors, as well as a group of handlers put on Wizard of Oz with dozens of local mentally challenged people. It was a full range of mental capacities, with lines being whispered to each person at the time it was supposed to be said. The sets were beyond my expectations, very creative and expansive. Here are a few snapshots of the night, including a blurry image of my Uncle's debut of being a crow...

He's the one with his arms outstretched in the middle!

Philadelphia Family Reunion 2008

Most people don't enjoy their family reunions. Especially when they really don't know any of the people that will be there, remember their names, or even know how they are related to them. I, however, was giddy about this past 4th of July so I could fly out with my mom and brother (Tim joined the next day) to Pennsylvania to attend the Roskamp Family Reunion. My mom and I went to the one five years ago, and I have been enamored since. Something about the place (Thomas Mill Farms, a huge property with a wheel house, gardener house, bamboo forrest, EVERYTHING) and all the people around eating and drinking. Its like people watching heaven.

Despite my mother having boarding pass issues in Waterloo (the worst airport on the planet, everyone there has a MAJOR power trip), we arrived in time for the barbecue by the creek. It was rather awkward when people think that my brother is my husband. I know they haven't seen Chris since he was a baby, or met Tim ever, but still, creepy ew. The first night is always the weirdest because you have no idea who anyone is and being introduced to 50 people all at once leaves little chance to actually remember anyone's names let alone relation. Add about 10 glasses of wine and beer PER person, and you have a mental mesh of mayhem!

The next day (Happy Independence Day!), we picked up Tim in a nearby town that has an Amtrak. Wayne, PA is the cutest most perfect town. An array of unique restaurants. A quirky mix of shops down a neat and tidy main street. An old time movie theater. And more yoga studios than I have ever seen in a ten mile radius. Adorable. Back at the Mills, we got a private tour of the bamboo forrest in the backyard. It was so in the middle of nowhere and random, it was like you stepped into a story book, with a panda hanging out just around the corner. These things are a lot of chillin out, on one of the many porches and decks or dens that they have. That afternoon, Tim and I were doing such with my grandma when the lady of the house asked us to make a liquor store run for her. We figured out that we were the designated runners because everyone else in the house old enough to have a license, was too buzzed at 2pm to drive to the store to get the "largest bottles you can find" of Jack Daniels and Grey Goose. THESE are the people you want to party with. Remember, that 60% are over 70, and 90% are over 40. And of course, only hours later was cocktail hour by the pool before the Independence Day BBQ feast. Its ridiculous what these people have catered. 3 ten foot long tables full of food. Gourmet food. Plus an ice cream bar with at least 10 different kinds of toppings. Insane. But delightful! Then come the embarrassing family stories about how my great aunt was born due to a pastor recommending birth control. And how she was almost named Iowa. Top it all off with a private fire works show, with several nearly killing people by shooting off the wrong way, and you have a grand Fourth of July!

That last day that my mother and brother were in town, the four of us drove to Amish country. The Amish culture has fascinated me since I was very little. I dont know why really, I have absolutely no desire to live in that manner, but I just find it most intriguing. So anytime I have the chance to be around it, sign me up! We took the Straasburg Railroad, slightly disappointed that we didnt see more Amish countryside since it was so short. We headed through the Lancaster countryside, taking as many discrete pictures as we could, and hitting up the Amish shops at Intercourse, PA. *insert own joke here* (no pun intended). Back at the Mills, our final Reunion activity was to witness the Family Talent Show. Most acts involved the little kids doing gymnastics or singing. But the top two acts were several of the older women singing about Menopause. And my personal favorite, my straight laced grandfather and his brothers, dressed up like the Beatles, lip syncing "I wanna hold your hand." Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6F8fAXOGz8 We were all crying with laughter. And after that, we rushed my mom and brother off to the airport to say goodbye. And of course, on the shuttle between the car rental and airport, I cant find my cell phone. So we have a rapid good bye as Tim and I go in search for it and start our own Philadelphia Phenomenon!
